SUP Accessories: 360 cameras

Filming your adventure is an excellent way to share it with friends and family, and get more people stoked on SUP. Read on to find out why I don't leave home without a 360 camera:

360 cameras have an undeserved stigma, as many people believe that they are only useful for capturing content to be used in VR headsets; and VR headset adoption has been slow. This is a misunderstanding; 360 cameras are fantastic for conventional video as well. In fact, I would argue that 360 cameras make the best action cameras, especially for SUP. When you mount a conventional camera on a SUP, you have to make a choice: do you want the camera to face you, or where you're going? 360 cameras remove this choice as they capture everything and let you choose the best angles later. A 360 camera essentially acts as a virtual cameraman that you can direct after the shot has been taken. I've included an example below:
Another benefit of a 360 camera is that when used with a selfie stick, it will hide the stick and make the footage look like the it was shot by another person, or a drone.
I've been using Insta360 products for the past 3 years, and have been extremely happy with the results. I started with the Insta360 One, which is a great entry level 360 camera, and one of the smallest dual lens cameras. I now use the Insta360 One X, which features 5.7k resolution which makes a big difference when filming in 360 degrees. I've been eyeing the Insta360 One R, which is a modular camera that can be configured both as a 360 camera and a conventional action camera with a massive 1" sensor, which would take excellent night shots. I also own a Insta 360 Go, which is a tiny life logging camera with a single lens. It will capture everything in front of it, but nothing behind it. However if I need an 8 hour timelapse, this is the camera I'll use.

I've included links to the products below, I really recommend checking them out. My Insta360 affiliate links should include some freebies (i.e., a selfie stick). GoPro has a competing 360 camera that I have not tried, but I expect to be fantastic as it's coming from GoPro. I've included a link to that as well. Note that I do participate in affiliate programs, and can earn a commission on qualifying purchases.

Insta 360 One - an affordable 4k 360 camera that delivers great results
Insta 360 One X - 5.7k 360 camera that ups the game on quality (my current cam)
Insta 360 One R - modular 360 camera that has built in waterproofing, stunning detail, and a price to match
Insta 360 Go - more of a life logging camera. If you want a tiny camera that attaches anywhere, check this out.
GoPro Max - has 2 primary modes: 360 and hero (standard action cam). If I bought any GoPro, it would be this one.

I find the idea of capturing everything with a 360 camera very appealing.
